Kenya Herpetology Tours is a dedicated herping safari company based in Nairobi, Kenya. We are guided by sustainable tourism principles and part of our profits are channeled directly to conservation and research.

Washington Wachira

Washington was born and raised in Central Kenya, at the foothills of the Aberdare Ranges. He has been leading Wildlife Tours in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda for many years. His educational background is in Environmental Science (BSc.), Animal Ecology (MSc.) and Animal Ecology (PhD.).

Washington has continued to enrich his knowledge through many trainings, including the Certificate course on the Biology of Amphibians and Reptiles.

He is a member of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA) and was awarded the African Sustainable Tourism Fellowship Award in 2016. Washington has co-authored many books and publications on animal ecology.

Over the years, Washington has worked and interned with many organisations; including Nature Kenya and the National Museums of Kenya. He is a former Chairperson of the Kenya Herpetofauna Working Group. He is also a member of the Southern African Herpetologists platform. 

His passion spans many fields, including mammals and birds. In 2017 he was on-stage as a TED Speaker, and gave a TED Talk titled “For the love of birds”. He is also a National Geographic Explorer.

Washington is a passionate film maker, and released his first documentary, “Urban Crowns”, in 2017. He is also an experienced nature photographer and has won many awards, including First Position in the Underwater Category of the 2016 East African Wild Life Photo Competition. Additionally, he is a featured photographer in the ON THE ROAD INITIATIVE by NIKON.

He has led many expeditions and research projects on reptiles and amphibians across Kenya. Washington has also discovered a lizard species new to Science (year 2021), which was named after his second name (Agama wachirai).

Felix Owuor

Kenya Herpetology Tours

Felix was born and raised in Kenya’s Nyanza Province. His enthusiasm and love for the environment and nature was developed at a tender age. Felix has a degree in Environmental Science and has continued to enrich his skills through many short courses. He also holds a Certificate in Tour Guiding and is an experienced driver. Over the years, he has worked to further enrich his knowledge and competence in environmental and species conservation. In this context, he has worked with several local organizations in Kenya to advance his knowledge, competence, expertise, and skills. These include the Ministry of Fisheries Development and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

He is also a member of the East Africa Natural History Society (Nature Kenya). He has advanced camping skills that have made him an expert in creating livable environments in the bush. He is a skilled herpetologist with a great passion for conservation education and awareness. He has taken part in researching the reptiles and amphibians of Nairobi, the Aberdare Ecosystem and Mt. Kenya. Felix is known for his passion and willingness to show others the unique wildlife and cultures of Kenya.
