This tour is meant to help every passionate herpetologist enjoy the vast diversity of reptiles and amphibians of Kenya, a gateway to African herpetology.
The country hosts over 100 species of amphibians, 4 species of tortoises, 5 species of terrapins, 1 soft-shelled freshwater turtle species, 5 species of marine turtles, 1 species of crocodile, 140 species of snakes and 130 species of lizards.
Kenya’s Herpetology is at its peak in this decade; with new species being discovered and described each year.
We shall depart early and head to Nairobi National Park; where our Herpetology and Mammals Day Tour will take place. This is Kenya’s oldest national park and also the only national park found inside a capital city, worldwide.
At the park, we shall drive and walk (at designated areas) seeking the local species. Habitats here include forests, savannah grassland, rocky cliffs, dams and rivers.
While we search for reptiles and amphibians, we shall enjoy many mammals. Local mammals of Nairobi National Park include African Buffalo, Common Zebra, Common Eland, Common Impala, Suni, Thomson’s Gazelle, Grant’s Gazelle, Coke’s Hartebeest, Common Wildebeest, Common Warthog, Maasai Giraffe, Black Rhino, White Rhino, Common Hippo, Olive Baboon, Vervet Monkey and African Lion.
Reptiles to expect in Nairobi National Park include Variable Skink, Common Striped Skink, Nile Monitor Lizard, White-lipped Snake, South African Rock Python, Black-necked Spitting Cobra, Nile Crocodile, Eastern Blue-headed Tree Agama, Kenya Red-headed Rock Agama, Helmeted/ Marsh Terrapin, Serrated Hinged Terrapin and Leopard Tortoise.
Amphibians species of Nairobi National Park include Marbled Snout-burrower, Northern Clawed Frog, Scheffler’s Puddle Frog, Common Ornate Frog, Nile Rocket Frog, Anchieta’s Rocket Frog, Cryptic/ Wamba Sand Frog, Senegal/ Bubbling Kassina, Guttural Toad and Athi Reed Frog.
